Direct flights to Luxor land at Luxor International Airport. Located just six kilometres from the city centre, it is one of the largest airports in the country and is well-known for its efficiency. It offers numerous services including a bus station, from which numerous shuttles depart towards the centre of Luxor. In the city it's easy to get around on minibuses, which are quite cheap and easily recognizable (they are entirely white), or with the shuttles provided by various hotels. However, many choose to get around by bicycle: a cheap way to travel and one that's easy to find.
Most of the temples in Luxor date back to the times of the pharaohs. One of the most important stops is the Temple of Luxor, dating back to the 14th century BC and dedicated to Amun, the greatest deity of the Egyptian religion. It stands along the eastern bank of the Nile and includes dozens of sphinxes and statues dating back to the time of the New Kingdom (16th-11th century BC). The Karnak complex was also dedicated to Amon, but also preserves numerous artefacts belonging to later periods. The most spectacular monumental sites are the Valley of the Kings and that of the Queens, which is near the burial sites of Tutankhamun and Nefertari. The exhibits of the Museum of Mummification are exceptional: they illustrate the ancient techniques used in the conservation of bodies
As you can imagine, Luxor is thriving during the day but not as much at night. Despite this, however, there are plenty of bars and restaurants where you can taste the many typical dishes. The most famous places where you can enjoy an evening out are almost all located along the Corniche, the east bank of the river. These include JJ's Bar and the King's Head. You can also opt for a mini night cruise along the Nile and admire the spectacle of the illuminated city.
