Karpathos Island is quite large, so it may be useful to rent a car directly at the airport. Alternatively, there are public buses, which have begun to pass more frequently in recent years. To visit the beaches scattered on the island there are special boats, most of which depart from Pigadia Port.
Karpathos' primary beauty lies in its beaches, but there is no shortage of alternative reasons to visit, starting in Pigadia with the Archaeological Museum, the Acropolis and the church of Agia Sofia. Panagia Larniotissa Monastery and the archaeological site of Potideon are situated near Pigadia. The delightful villages of Ammoupi, Olympos and Arkasa (with its Acropolis) are also worth seeing, to be followed by a stop in Diafani. A boat trip to the islands of Saria and Lefkos and Tristomo bay is also recommended.
The island features the truly spectacular beaches, thanks to the fine sand, shallow waters and the alternation of open bays and small hidden coves. Pigadia, Amooupi and Lefkos are among the most popular beaches, ideal for everyone and equipped with many services. However, there are many other opportunities to explore, such as Apella Beach and the wild and unspoilt Nati Beach and Forokli in the east of the island or Diakofti Beach to the south.
The main entertainment district is in Pigadia, with taverns and restaurants where you can taste typical dishes, beach bars hosting parties lasting until dawn (Amos Mangos), discos (Fever) where you can spend hours of fun, clubs with live music (Boulevards of Broken Dreams) and the most elegant cafés (Anoi House Spirits Bar & Cafè) in which to enjoy relaxing moments while admiring the port and the nighttime shades of the sea. The Panigiria festival, on 15th August is among the most important and characteristic traditional events.
