Makedonia airport is located near the town of Mikra, 17 kilometres from Thessaloniki. Despite being one of the largest cities in Greece, there are not many transport solutions to reach the centre: in addition to taxis, in fact, there is only one bus line. The route is covered by bus 78, which connects the airport with the Thessaloniki terminal every half hour. The cost of a single journey is 0.80 euros.
The vibrant city of Thessaloniki is rich in history. The most famous monument is the White Tower, a symbol of the city that commemorates the massacre of the Janissaries, the Christians who refused to convert to Islam. Nowadays, the tower which dominates the coastline is no longer white. The city museum is situated inside. Don't miss the archaeological museum, located in Via Andronikou which houses abundant discoveries from the Roman and Hellenistic periods. The most beautiful beach on the southern coast is undoubtedly Katerini, which stretches for miles and features soft fine sand. Nearby, visitors can also find Makrigialos, located in an area that is not very touristy and particularly cheap. The most beautiful of all, however, is Epanomi, a strip of white sand surrounded by turquoise waters.
