Makedonia airport is located near the town of Mikra, 17 kilometres from Thessaloniki. Despite being one of the largest cities in Greece, there are not many transport solutions to reach the centre: in addition to taxis, in fact, there is only one bus line. The route is covered by bus 78, which connects the airport with the Thessaloniki terminal every half hour. The cost of a single journey is 0.80 euros.
The vibrant city of Thessaloniki is rich in history. The most famous monument is the White Tower, a symbol of the city that commemorates the massacre of the Janissaries, the Christians who refused to convert to Islam. Nowadays, the tower which dominates the coastline is no longer white. The city museum is situated inside. Don't miss the archaeological museum, located in Via Andronikou which houses abundant discoveries from the Roman and Hellenistic periods. The Roman domination left important traces, including the Arch, the Palace and the Rotunda of Galerius. The latter was first transformed into a church, then into a mosque. Finally, the Roman Agora and the Kastrá (castle), located in the Upper Town, are splendid to visit. Visitors who wish to immerse themselves in the typical Greek atmosphere, cannot miss out on the Modiano, the most famous traditional market in Thessaloniki.
The most beautiful beach on the southern coast is undoubtedly Katerini, which stretches for miles and features soft fine sand. Nearby, visitors can also find Makrigialos, located in an area that is not very touristy and particularly cheap. The most beautiful of all, however, is Epanomi, a strip of white sand surrounded by turquoise waters.
Those looking for good food and fun can't ignore the Ladadika neighbourhood, which is completely pedestrianised and very busy, especially after sunset. The most famous clubs? Club Division, Matter Club, and the Houze Urban Warehouse.
