Porto Santo is a small and welcoming island that is part of the autonomous region of Madeira. The presence of the Gulf stream makes its waters warm and the climate is mild all year round, with temperatures ranging between 18 and 27°C and low rainfall. Thanks to Neos Low Cost flights, a holiday to Porto Santo is at your fingertips at any time of the year.
The island is 10 km long and 6 km wide. To visit it, just rent a bicycle or, for those who want to be more comfortable, a car or scooter. In any case, a bus and taxi service is available.
Vila Baleira is the main town and certainly worth a visit. There is the Christopher Columbus House Museum, the beautiful Igreja de Nossa Senhora de Piedade, the ancient Fortaleza de Sao Jose and the Municipal Palace, built in the sixteenth century in Portuguese Renaissance style. Do not miss out on a trek to reach the top of Pico do Facho, the highest peak in Porto Santo, which offers a breathtaking view of the island and neighbouring Madeira. At the Fonte de Areia you can see spectacular sandy rocks sculpted by the wind, and on the Pico de Ana Ferreira, near the Pedreira viewpoint, you can see the so-called organ pipes, very rare pentagonal and hexagonal geological formations.
The southern coast of Porto Santo is a single beach with fine, golden sand that extends from the southern tip of Ponta da Calheta, an area renowned for its sunsets, to the quay of the Porto Santo sailing club. The rest of the coast is high and rocky, making it difficult to access. Praia do Zimbralinho, to the south west, is a small pebbled cove that can be reached through a picturesque but rather steep path. Water from a spring creates a natural shower. In Porto as Salemas, in the northern part of the island, the reef creates natural pools. Avoid at high tide.
Many restaurants offer the island's typical cuisine. Bachalau, or cod, is the basic ingredient of many recipes. However, you can also eat espetada, meat skewers seasoned with garlic and bay leaves and served with fried millet; bolo de caco, homemade bread served with salted butter and garlic; espada, breaded fish cooked with bananas.
