It is an excellent destination for immersing yourself in the history and culture of Andalusia, enjoying the sea and good food, going shopping and having fun. Malaga airport is located 9 km south west of the city centre. The main local and international car rental agencies have an airport counter. Bus number 19 connects the airport to the city centre, and leaves from the City Bus stop outside the arrivals area. It stops at the main train and bus stations. The train station is 5 minutes walk from the airport terminal and there are trains leaving for Malaga Renfe and Malaga Centro.
The main sites of cultural interest are concentrated in the old part of the city, dominated by the imposing Cathedral known as La Manquita (the One-Armed Lady), because one of the bell towers was left incomplete when the costs of the project became too high. Gibralfaro Castle, a signal tower and military barracks built in the eight century, is located near the Alcazaba, the sumptuous fortress palace of the Muslim governors of Malaga. You can take refuge from the summer heat at the Jardín Botánico La Concepción, home to tropical plants and ponds, and you can buy fresh products of all kinds at the Mercado Atarazanas. Do not miss the Picasso Museum, which houses a collection of 204 works by the artist, who was born in Malaga.
Playa de la Malagueta is a 10 minute walk from the centre of Malaga and is the site of some of the best restaurants, chiringuitos, bars and shops in the city. Baños del Carmen is home to the oldest spa in the city, which was inaugurated in 1918. Playa de Pedregalejo is in a typical area, surrounded by fishermen's houses.
The Baños Arabes are a perfect place for relaxing surrounded by fragrant vapours and soft music while having massages, Ayurvedic treatments and aromatherapy. It's best to book. Going for tapas (snacks) in tapas bars or in traditional bodegas, old cellars and wine bars, is one of the most popular local pastimes, as an aperitif before a meal or after dinner. Keep in mind that in Andalusia meal times are even later than in the rest of Spain.
